Made in North Carolina, or MINNC for short, is currently a general list of useful North Carolina website links. Check back often, as their Website will grow and become a very comprehensive site for North Carolina’s most resourceful links. These resources can help you find N.C. products, places and information easily. There are also over 180 original photographs on the pages. As they continue to travel throughout the state, more links and photos will be added. They have just started adding selected, local producers of N.C. products that can be purchased directly, such as their new featured addition, Simplicity Sofas.  That would be us!

Coming this year, expect more local producers on the MINNC website and a gallery of photos by region (available for purchase in the future). Look for information on upcoming projects, as they are constantly adding to their Website.

“Kid-Proof" Fabrics

Got Pets or Children? Most people do.

Altima Merlot Pet Proof FabricDo you live where your children and pets run around inside and outside? If so, you know how time consuming it can be to clean up after them. Most of our children and furry friends like to enjoy the same comforts of home that we do by  napping or playing on our sofas and sometimes, accidents happen.

Simplicity Sofas offers “kid proof” fabrics specifically engineered for people who don’t want to worry about dirt or stains on their sofas or couches.

Originally created for health care facilities where cleanliness is mandatory, the engineers at Microfibres, Inc. (an American fabric manufacturer) came up with an exclusive process for binding a permanent protective coating into the fibers of the fabrics. The protection does not wear off like spray-on fabric protectors. In factory tests the only stain that could not be removed with soap and water was mustard.

Altima Sand 'Pet-Proof FabricWe ran a test in our Showroom on our Altima Sand “kid-proof” fabric (an off-white color) to see how stain-proof it was. We drew one line with a ballpoint pen and then another line with a thick, black new permanent marker. We allowed both stains to set for about an hour. We then tried to clean the stains using liquid hand soap and a paper towel. The ball point pen ink came out in a few seconds.

The permanent marker stain was almost completely gone after 5 minutes of scrubbing. The stain proofing is built into the fibers. You do not need the spray-on fabric protection with the microfiber “kid-proof” fabrics. We do highly recommend the spray-on fabric protection for the cotton fabrics.

Even if you don’t have kids or pets, these fabrics are wonderful solutions for high traffic areas like the den or family room, where people aren’t always careful about where they spill things or where they rest their feet to watch TV. “Kid-proof” fabrics can be your solution to these problems. If an accident should occur, these fabrics clean easily with a little soap and water and dry very fast.

Here are just a few examples of our “kid-proof” fabric swatches that you can order online today!

Brighten up a dull room by mixing and matching fabrics. Add contrasting throw pillows or a slipcover or two. When it comes to decorating an entire space or simply adding a new piece of furniture from Simplicity Sofas, like a small couch, it’s easy to do with the abundant fabric choices available. Are you starting from scratch and decorating an entire room or trying to find a full-size sofa or small couch that will fit your existing décor? Let’s explore some options and fabric combinations that may help you in designing a space that’s right for you.

Existing Décor
There are so many fabrics available that will work nicely with any existing décor. One thing you need to think about when selecting the fabric is the room’s lighting and how it affects the color of the fabric. First, you need to consider the natural lighting. If your project involves a room that gets the morning sunlight, where you drink your mocha and read the news before heading out the door, consider light and airy fabrics that the sun can complement. The sun doesn’t alter these fabric colors as it might darker ones in this environment.

Even if you don’t have a lot of natural sunlight at anytime during the day, brighter colors can be mixed and matched to lighten it up a bit. The brighter colors will bring the darker room alive and make it an inviting living space. Adding some strategically placed lighting and a mirror or two will help liven it up, as well.

Decide what type of seating you need. If you live in a small apartment and want to just add a piece or two such as a small couch, chair or an apartment sofa; prints, solid colors, and small stripes work well. If you are trying to match furniture already in the room, a solid color would obviously be your best choice. With over 100 fabrics to choose from, you’ll be able to mix and match with ease. Ask for free fabric samples and get started!

Starting from Scratch
If you are starting with a clean slate; in other words, an open room where you can add a few pieces of seating and new paint color – start by figuring out which fabrics you want to consider first for your home furnishings. Try to select the fabrics you like best BEFORE the paint color. It’s easier to find a paint color to compliment a fabric than the other way around in most situations where you are starting from scratch.

Lorelei Collection

As stated before, the room’s lighting will affect the appearance of the fabric color AND the paint color. There can be a noticeable difference between natural sunlight and various types of artificial lighting from morning to night. Certain colors can appear cooler or warmer depending on the lighting. Bright, natural light shows colors most accurately and can help determine the ideal color to use.

Fabrics with patterns can add interest to the room and make a sofa or small couch the center of attention. Again, don’t be afraid to mix and match a pattern with a solid color to compliment the grouping.

Your chair and ottoman can be a completely different color than the apartment sofa! Adding slipcovers and contrasting throw pillows can also change the look, whether you are adding to your existing décor or starting from scratch.

While fabric selection may seem like a daunting task for many, it is one of the most important aspects of beginning to create a space that you will enjoy for many years. If you have questions about color or fabric combinations, or need help determining which size sofa, small couch or chair you’d like, please give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you with your product selection and fabric combinations.

Take a Trip Inside Your Home & Our World.

A Unique View of YourselfA living room should be designed to bring people together. It is a pleasant landscape or portrait that allows you to paint an unique view of yourself and create a space where others want to visit. Your space and the way you choose to decorate it says, “This is me and this is where I want to relax and spend quality time.”

What do you think about your space? Let’s take a take a trip inside your home, your style and your color and our world of options.

Do you live in a one-room studio apartment, a warehouse loft or a challenging small apartment where you need to make use of every inch of your interior? Just remember that your style and selections of color for your canvas make all the difference in the world.

Style and Substance Matters. Let’s look at a few options.

Studio Apartments
If you are moving into a studio apartment, some people choose sleeper sofas. Sometimes there just isn’t enough space for everything like small couches, chairs, tables, bed and other items. A sleeper sofa is a great space saving option as the piece is not only a full-size sofa which allows for maximum seating for guests when they arrive, but it is also a place for you to sleep comfortably when they leave.

Sleeper sofas seat your guests so you can rest! Our sleeper sofa option is unique and allows for maximum seating space in a studio apartment and optimum sleeping arrangements for you. (See Sleeper Sofa option here) Place a couple of storage ottomans in front of the sofa for extra seating and/or storage. If you place tray tables on top of the ottomans, they can double as cocktail tables for you or your guest. When you are ready for bed, move the ottomans to either side of your sleeper sofa, easily transforming them into nightstands. Or slide the ottomans to the end of the sleeper sofa and pull out your favorite book from the storage compartment. Our innovative air sleep system will keep you dozing off to a peaceful sleep night after night.

Keep the colors of the walls and the fabrics of your upholstery complimenting, yet contrasting, as this adds drama to any small room. If you are allowed to paint the walls and considering new apartment furniture – - contrary to popular belief; paint the walls last! It may be a bit harder to do this, since the space is so small. But I recommend selecting your fabric and accessories first and backing into the wall color last. It’s easier to repaint than reupholster …

Warehouse Lofts
Are you redecorating your loft?

Nice airy loftIf you have the luxury of an open and airy space in a warehouse loft, laden with wood or brick as your backdrop, place a couple of small couches facing each other so you can see and interact with your invited guest. You can also add the storage ottomans to double as cocktail tables between the two sofas and keep a good scrabble game and conversation going.

Even if you have limited space in your loft apartment, floating a small couch in the middle of the loft will give you the extra seating you need to watch TV or chat with neighbors that pop in.

Apartment LoftDo you have a roommate, but still want your own space in the living commons? Consider arranging a couple of chairs and a half near a large window away from the floating sofa. Place an accent table or bunching tables between the two chairs. This gives you and your housemate your own places to relax in silent comfort of the warm sun or, share conversation without having to share the small sofa. You can add a storage ottoman to the end of each chair and you both have your own space for magazines, books or laptops.

If you are lucky enough to have the original cement flooring in your loft, make sure you creatively paint it and accent with throw rugs which in and of itself creates separate spaces in a warehouse loft.

Small Apartments
Are you downsizing to a small apartment? Or are you moving from your studio apartment into a tiny bit bigger space to accommodate a new child or relative? Where do you put all the stuff? Even though there are lots of possibilities with both scenarios above, (see studio apartments and warehouse lofts ideas above), small apartments can be the most challenging, but still offer plenty of options.

Simplicity Sofas Brandon CollectionDepending on your particular space, one thing you need to consider in a small apartment is your interior room measurements. There are a lot of options from Simplicity Sofas to fit EVERY need. When it comes to small apartments, our loveseats, small apartment sofas, chairs and full-size sleeper sofas will fit up your narrow stairs or elevator and through any door. Just have a pretty clear idea of where to place the items once they get there.

Space planning is so important. Our apartment sofas are very popular for this scenario. Don’t forget to place a chair in the room and throw contrasting colored pillows on the sofa to make the room come alive. We have all these options and more and welcome your phone call to discuss your particular project.

I have always been a proponent of the “two loveseats facing each other” concept. It allows for maximum space in a small apartment and if you have a roommate or someone else living with you, you each have your own place in the living room to relax without sitting on top of each other or bringing in uncomfortable futons. Forget the futon! And don’t forget, storage ottomans and/or nesting tables which are always popular ideas for decorating and maximizing the small apartment space.

Wall color, upholstery color and properly-sized placement of mirrors and artwork are all important in a small apartment. All, if chosen and placed accordingly will make the room look and feel larger.

What style are you? What color is your portrait? So take a trip inside your home and around our world! You don’t need to feel like you’re living in a bubble. If you do feel this way, let’s discuss and share a few options in this blog and some inventive ways to maximize your space, creating an artful environment unique to you. If you are looking for furniture for small spaces, or have a small doorway, tight stairs or an elevator which makes it virtually impossible for you to get “real” furniture into your studio loft or small apartment, you don’t have to settle for futons. Our sofas, small apartment sofas, loveseats, chairs and storage ottomans are the answer to all your needs when it comes to getting affordable furniture through these tight spaces. You can choose from 70 fabric combinations, including pet-proof fabrics and slipcovers.

Simplicity Sofas Sleeper Sofa

Even our full-size sofas, which can accommodate our wonderful 20 inch deep queen size air sleep system, fits through the smallest spaces, so you or your guests have a place to relax and then rest comfortably on a real sofa bed. Apartment sofas, which are a little smaller than our full-size sofas work great in small spaces and are an excellent alternative to futons. You don’t need to settle for small, uncomfortable ready-to-assemble furniture, when you have Simplicity Sofas as your alternative quality showroom seating.

Our line of sofas and chairs is designed to ship in 3 boxes and assembles in less than 15 minutes without tools, with the look and feel of showroom quality living room or family room furniture. The frames are made of solid oak and come with a LIFETIME GUARANTEE. Your guests will be impressed and much more comfortable sitting on a real sofa or in a real chair, than a futon.
